Top 10 Kamal movies

Kamal Haasan has acted in hundreds of movies and there isn't an award that the actor hasn't won in a career spanning over 5 decades. So its difficult to pick a top 10 movie list from such a vast list of quality movies. Still, I make an attempt in picking top 10 of the very best kamal movies (or rather my 10 favourite kamal movies).

10. Sathi Leelavathi

(Cast : Kamal Haasan, Ramesh Aravind, Kovai Sarala and others)

Coming in at no. 10 in our list of Kamal movies is Sathi Leelavathi. Though Kamal plays a supporting role in the movie (to Ramesh Aravind) and appears mostly only in the second half of the movie, he manages to pull of one of the best comedy roles in Tamil Cinema. Carrying the Coimbatore accent to perfection, Kamal who plays a doctor in the movie, is on a mission to reunite Ramesh Aravind and his wife Leelavathi. Must watch for all comedy movie fans.

Best Scene : The hilarious climax scene where Kovai Sarala misunderstands the relationship between Kamal and Heera, and takes off in a car, ( with no brakes ) and Kamal follows in a motor bike to win her back.

9. Varumai Niram Sivappu :

(Cast : Kamal Haasan, Sridevi, SV Shekar and others )

At No.9 in our list is Varumai Niram Sivappu. Kamal plays the role of a unemployed youth, who lives with his 2 friends in Delhi. He is honest and straightforward, and doesn't tolerate deceit prevalent in the modern society, the same attitude which prevents him from getting a job. Kamal pays the role to perfection and the movie has a powerful ending with a good message to the youth of the nation.

Best Scene : An apple gets thrown in a dustbin and a group of graduates fight among themselves to get hold of the fruit. A great metaphor showing the competition and the limited opportunities youth in India have after completing graduation.

8. Thevar Magan :

(Cast : Sivaji Ganesan, Kamal Hasan, Revathi, Gouthami )

At no. 8 is Thevar Magan, where Kamal plays the role of young person, educated abroad, who comes back to his village after his stay abroad. He struggles to come to terms with the barbaric nature of the local villagers and is intent on moving elsewhere. How Kamal is eventually forced into the very life that he tries hard to avoid forms the rest of the story.

Best Scene : The emotional conversation between Sivaji and Kamal, where Kamal informs his father that he is going to leave the village.

7. Pesum Padham :

(Cast : Kamal Haasan, Amla and others )

Coming in at no. 7 is Pesum Padham where Kamal again plays the role of an unemployed youth, but this time with no dialogues at all. In fact the movie is so well directed and acting is so good that you won't realise the fact that there aren't any dialogues in the movie for the initial few minutes.  Using only expressions Kamal manages to bring out the financial difficulties of an unemployed person who acquires sudden wealth, although in an unethical way.

Best Scene :  The climax scene where Kamal decides to do the right thing !

6. Mahanadi :

(Cast : Kamal haasan, Suganya and others)

Kamal plays the role of a honest man, who gets cheated by his business partner in a chit fund business. He lands up in jail separated from his family members, who go through life's hardship without him. Kamal delivers a powerful role of a person who has been cheated, sequences where he spends time in jail are very well directed and Kamal gives a convincing performance.

Best Scene : The scene where Kamal search for his daughter ends in brothel.

5. Indian

(Cast : Kamal Haasan, Suganya, Manisha Koirala and others)

Kamal plays a dual role of a very patriotic freedom fighter and his son (not as patriotic) who doesn't mind taking short cuts to success. The flash back scenes showing India's freedom movement were the highlight of the movie and Kamal plays the role of a freedom fighter and the older vigilante who kills people who are corrupt with style and ease.

Best scene : Patriotism wins as father kamal kills his son in a very well acted scene where kamal shows great emotional pain while killing his son.

4.Sigappu Rojakkal :

(Cast : Kamal Haasan, Sri Devi and others)

Kamal plays the role of a ultra handsome rich psychotic killer ( yes! ) who kills young women. He has a troubled childhood which transforms into a monster who kills women. Kamal gives a stellar performance, first as a handsome young man seducing Sri devi and then as a psychotic person who goes out of control.

Best Scene : The scene where Sri Devi persters Kamal with questions after which he loses his composure and shouts nothing, nothing, nothing. He even writes it down on the table showing the audience his psychopatic side.

3. Michael Madana Kama Rajan :

(Cast : Kamal Haasan, Khushbu, Urvashi, Nagesh and others )

Kamal plays 4 characters this time. Quadraplets are separated at birth, how they meet each other and find out their real identity forms the story. Without much difference in the looks of the character, kamal manages to appear as four completely different characters just by his body language and dialogue delivery. with a stellar cast supporting kamal this truly is a comedy master piece.

Best Scene : Beemboy Beemboy, andha locker lenthu aaru laksham eduthu andha avinashi naai moojile thooki eri :)

2. Nayagan :

(Cast : Kamal haasan, Saranya, Nasser and others )

Kamal plays the role of a gangster based in mumbai. Probably the best gangster movie made in Indian cinema, kamal acts and changes his body language as his character ages in the movie. Based losely on The Godfather, how an ordinary youth becomes a gangster and his eventual demise forms the crux of the story.

Best scene :  kamal crying as he slowly discovers death of his son.

1. Apoorva Sagothargal :

(Cast : Kamal Hasan, Gouthami, Manorama and others )

Kamal plays three roles in this ultimate revenge movie. Appu a circus clown, sets on a mission to kill 4 persons who killed his father, Sethupathy, an honest cop. Appu's younger brother Raja gets tangled in Appu's crimes. Kamal went through physical torture to pull off the role of Appu and set new standards in commitment.

Best Scene : Murder scene of Sethupathy by Nagesh and his friends which sets the tone for the rest of the movie.
